The Methods Of Modifying PVC

Due to the shortcomings of PVC resin, such as poor performance of forming process, high melt viscosity, poor fluidity, low thermal stability and easy to be decomposed, some PVC products have poor resistance to aging, brittle, hard, cracked, tough and cold. So, PVC has to be modified to remedy the mentioned defects. There are two methods to modify PVC: chemical modification and physical modification.

Chemical modification 

1. Copolymerization modification, that is let VCM take place copolymerization reaction with other monomer such as vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylic ester, MAH, etc. to improve the performance of forming process, or low temperature of forming, or develop new usage, or become new material. 

2. Bring other monomer group or another polymer into PVC side chain to conduct grafting reaction. For example: EVA was grafted with VCM in order to control the number and polymerization of the grafting part of vinyl chloride, so that impact property, cold brittleness, aging resistance of modified material will be improved.

3. Chloridize PVC with water-phase suspension method (or gas-phase method) in order to increase CL content from 57% to 65%. The purpose is to improve heat resistance of PVC and let using temperature rise by 35-40℃. It is called CPVC. The density of CPVC is higher than that of PVC by 1.7g/cm3. Its flame resistance and tensile strength are better than PVC, but its shortcoming is low impact strength. Forming process of CPVC is difficult and its forming temperature is higher than PVC by 10-20. Its adjusting range of temperature is limited. The dosage of stabilizer is more than PVC by 1-2 times and the dosage of lubricant is more than PVC, too. CPVC can make products by extrusion, injection and rolling process. CPVC can be used for pipe, sheet, profile, foaming materials, adhesives, coating, modifying agent.

Physical modification 

Physical modification improves performance of PVC by adding various auxiliaries or filling, blending, and enhancing.

1. For example, add ACR to improve the performance of forming process of PVC, or add internal and external lubricant or polyethylene wax to improve viscosity and fluidity, or add heat stabilizer to improve heat stability and reduce decomposition temperature, or add antioxidant and anti-UV agent to improve aging resistance life of products, or add plasticizer to improve plasticizing performance of materials and softness of products.

2. Filling modification is adding inorganic or organic filler to improve some kinds of performance. For example, adding wood powder to reduce specific gravity of PVC products to approximate wood, adding metal powder such as copper powder and aluminum powder to enhance electric conduction ability of products.

3. Blending modification is that add and mix one or two kinds of high polymer (rubber, plastic, elastomer) with PVC to become “polymer alloy”, so that fluidity or impact resistance can be improved. For example, some materials like ABS, MBS, CPE, EVA, NBR, EPR, CPVC, Dioctyl maleate can be blending modified with PVC.

4. Besides, enhancing modification, cross-linking modification, foaming modification, radiating modification can be used for improving the performance of PVC.
